Sound Shaping and Exploring
Sometimes I need to just dig into some sounds and see what is there already, or bend and stretch and filter for some sweet spot.
Mammut A small, unpredictable, sound sculpting program. I like the shifting mammoth… I mainly get noise out of it but at least it’s unique noise. I think this is one of the many programs that is soon to not run on my mac.
Cecelia 5 I've had increasingly more crashes with this recently also... but again I find it hard to let go of nice legacy software.
Envion Another good one for chucking a folder of collected files at and seeing where it goes. This should possibly be in a different list about randomisation and layering actually. I like this developers other instruments too, although I find the lack of explanation of controls to be a bit too esoteric. I don't always have the patience to let things unfold when I am trying to generate ideas.
Composers Desktop Project and SoundThread Soundthread is my GUI of choice for CDP, and seems to work best with modern OS.
Changing the settings to ‘Right Click Opens Explore’ is helpful, as the modules are pretty vast and hard to navigate
Make sure to read instructions for mac install because there is a bug that needs to be patched in Soundthread, also the security permissions step didn’t work for me, so to remove the quarentine on whole folder i used xattr -cr /path/to/cdp8folder.
Also my SoundThread didn’t open with Rosetta by default, so that needed to be changed.
Kyma Do you have $3302 to $3818 to throw at this? and also the time to learn a whole new, deep operating system? I wish I did but it’s a blessing I do not. This one is for the noodlers and tweakers. I did seriously consider this at one point on the strength of this morphing algorithm but i’m just holding out hope that domestic processors will be able to reach this at some point. I am imagining that some of the AI tools might be able to get close to this now even if it is just an impression of the morph and not in realtime, something to be investigated.
